A Message from the Medical Panel to C-8 Class Members:
As you know, the C-8 Science Panel and their studies, in which many of you took part, found that there is a Probable Link between exposure to C-8 and six health conditions. This list of conditions was then presented to the Medical Panel, to make recommendations about a Medical Monitoring Program for Class Members. The Program began in 2014 to offer free screening tests to eligible Class Members.
To date, a very small number of the almost 80,000 eligible Class Members have participated in the screening program. The Medical Panel encourages Class Members to participate in the screening. Come out and get tested! Most of the free screening involves only completing brief questionnaires, having an exam and giving a blood or urine sample. It’s a lot like going to the doctor for an annual check-up when you are feeling fine.
Depending on your answers to the questionnaires and the results of the initial tests, you and the Clinician would decide whether to proceed with additional testing that is included in the Medical Monitoring Protocol. Your opinion matters in deciding on whether to take any such additional testing! Any additional testing that is part of the Medical Monitoring Protocol is also provided at no cost to you. If you have questions about whether any tests or procedures would be paid for by the Medical Monitoring Program, you can call 1-888-499-2553 to ask questions before you proceed further.
We believe the benefits of your participation include getting an opportunity to talk about your concerns about C-8 and your health with a knowledgeable healthcare professional. Also, some of you will benefit from having the C-8 Probable Link conditions identified early, rather than down the road, when it might be more difficult to treat.
Each Class Member who participates in the program will be asked to consent to share the results of the tests in an anonymous way with the Medical Panel. Providing consent is voluntary and will not affect your participation in the program. The Medical Panel is not conducting more research like the studies conducted by the Science Panel. The Medical Panel is looking at the data collected to make decisions about what tests should be part of the program in the future. You would be helping the Medical Panel learn how long to continue the Medical Monitoring Program, and your participation may provide more information about how long C-8 levels remain elevated in your body.
The Medical Panel realizes that getting tested may be an inconvenience and that it requires you taking time out of your busy day to get it done. We hope the information you receive from your test results will make participation worthwhile for you, and we appreciate your willingness to participate. Thank you.
A note from the Director: DuPont assumes no role in any decision by a class member to participate in the Medical Monitoring program. If a class member elects to participate, it is voluntary.
New Follow Up Screening Alert
If you have been seen by a doctor as part of the C-8 (PFOA) Medical Monitoring Program, the Medical Panel previously recommended that you should have a follow up screening three years after your first medical monitoring program screening took place. If you had a follow up screening three years after your first screening, the Medical Panel now recommends that you should also have another follow up screening three years after your second screening. The Medical Panel has recommended that even if you had normal screening tests three years ago, you should have a follow up screening since little is known about how long the effects of exposure to PFOA last. We will send you a letter three years after your initial screening and three years after your follow up screening to remind you to make an appointment.
If you have been notified that you are an eligible Class Member entitled to medical monitoring and have not yet been seen by a doctor, you should call the Medical Monitoring Administrator to schedule an appointment with a participating physician provider for your initial screening.

Description of the C-8 Medical Monitoring Program:
A settlement in the class action, Jack Leach et al. v. E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Civil Action No. 01-C-608, was approved by the West Virginia Circuit Court in February 2005 (the "Settlement"). The class action is related to the release of a chemical known as ammonium perfluorooctanate (hereinafter "C-8"), attributable to releases from DuPont's Washington Works Plant in Wood County, West Virginia, into human drinking water supplies in certain specified areas.
As part of the Settlement, Class Counsel and DuPont mutually agreed upon an independent three-member scientific panel (the "Science Panel") to conduct and evaluate studies to answer the question whether there is a "Probable Link" between C-8 exposure and any Human Disease. The Settlement Agreement defines Probable Link to mean that, based upon the weight of the available scientific evidence, it is more likely than not that there is a link between exposure to C-8 and a particular Human Disease among Class Members. After lengthy studies, in which many Class Members participated, the Science Panel found that there is a Probable Link between exposure to C-8 and the following Human Diseases.
- pregnancy-induced hypertension (including preeclampsia),
- kidney cancer,
- testicular cancer,
- thyroid disease,
- ulcerative colitis, and
- high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia).
The Science Panel did not find that a Probable Link exists for any other Human Disease. As called for by the Settlement, the parties mutually agreed upon an independent panel of three medical doctors (the "Medical Panel") to develop general guidelines for Medical Monitoring that is related to the Human Diseases for which the Science Panel delivered a Probable Link Finding and is different from what would otherwise be prescribed for Class Members absent exposure to C-8 ("Medical Monitoring Protocol.") The Medical Panel has now released a Medical Monitoring Protocol identifying initial recommended medical monitoring procedures for Class Members for each of these Human Diseases. Information on these medical monitoring procedures can be found in the Medical Panel's Information on the C-8 Medical Monitoring Program Screening Tests document on the Important Legal and Other Documents tab. The Medical Panel will issue an additional Protocol specifying the frequency and duration of the recommended tests and Class Members will receive an additional notice addressing these issues when that additional Protocol is issued.
If you believe you may be a Class Member and would like to obtain medical monitoring, you should fill out the Class Member Registration and Eligibility Form. This form may be completed online through the website or by downloading and printing the form for mailing to the Medical Monitoring Administrator at the address listed below and on the form. The Medical Monitoring Administrator will promptly determine if you are an eligible Class Member. If you are an eligible Class Member, you will receive a package of information containing detailed information explaining what steps you should take to participate in and receive medical monitoring as established by the Medical Monitoring Program.
